The Gold Krugerrand was the first 1oz gold bullion coin produced for investment purposed. It was launched by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery in 1967. This led to other countries following by creating their own 1oz gold coins, like Canada with the 1oz Gold Maple Leaf.

In 2017 for the 50th anniversary of the Krugerrand, the South African Mint introduced a new silver version of the coin. The first Silver Krugerrands were issued in 2018 for investment purpose.
